Rosa Parks refused to give up her seat. 

Riding home from work on a Montgomery, Alabama, city bus, Rosa Parks was ordered to give up her seat for a white passenger. She refused and was arrested. Her arrest led fellow African Americans to boycott the city’s buses. The bus boycott is credited with ending institutionalized segregation in the South. In 1957, Parks moved to Detroit, where she lived until her death.
