The Sixth Michigan Cavalry was organized.

The Sixth Michigan Cavalry was mustered into federal service at Grand Rapids. Organized by Congressman Francis W. Kellogg, the Sixth headed for Washington, DC. Commanded by Colonel George Gray, the Sixth was brigaded with three other Michigan regiments to form the Michigan Cavalry Brigade.
