The cornerstone for the new State Capitol was laid.
Thirty-five thousand spectators watched as the cornerstone for the new State Capitol was lowered into place. A box inside the stone contained forty-eight items, including a Lansing city directory, a Bible, various 1873 coins, and a pen used to sign the 1835 state constitution. The completed building was dedicated on January 1, 1879.
